Boyd et al (2021) have put together a comprehensive guide to becoming a teacher educator. The guidance helps you develop new knowledge alongside a new identity as a Teacher Educator.
Teacher Education fits under different frameworks depending on whether it is university or school based and which country it is in
FHEQ
Framework for Higher Education Qualifications in the UK (FHEQ). This sets out the expectations at Levels 4, 5, 6 (undergraduate), 7 (PGCE and masters) and 8 (doctorate)
These set out the expectations for degree programmes in terms of content and standards. The closest 'subject' for ITE is Education Studies but it is not an exact match.
ITE in England currrently needs to follow the Core Curriculum Framework (CCF) and meet the Teachers' Standards. The ITE Market Review published in 2021 resulted in major changes to who could
provide ITE in England and how they did so.
ITE in Scotland is regulated by the General Teaching Council Scotland. The routes into teaching in Scotland are all university based and last 4 or 5 years in total.
ITE is provided by Stranmillis University College, St Mary's University College, Queen's University Belfast and Ulster University. This can be through a 4 year BEd or a 1 year PGCE.
